Beyond The Game | Chapter 20
Beyond The Game started with the publishing of the book, which explores how sports teach life lessons through Duane's personal journey, from his introduction to sports, through college, the NBA Draft process, and being drafted in the professional Slamball League. The book was his story, but now it's time to tell yours.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Duane Lightfoot Jr. was an honor student, at Jeffersontown High School. He graduated with a 3.6 GPA before earning a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at Butler University. During his four years at Butler, Duane completed a Bachelor of Science in Marketing.
He later earned a Master of Science in Social Media Marketing from Southern New Hampshire University. Duane and his wife, Kayla, relocated from Kentucky to Florida, where they are raising their two children, Duane III and Dylan.
Professionally, Duane works in the healthcare industry while also serving as a mentor and sports trainer in his community. He is deeply passionate about fitness, sports, and investing in the next generation—helping young athletes learn the game the right way while pursuing success both on and off the court.
Once cut from his sixth-grade middle school basketball team, Duane persevered to build a successful high school and collegiate career. At Jeffersontown, he averaged 8.0, 16.6, and 18.6 points per game over his final three seasons, earning Louisville Player of the Year honors, Third Team All-State honors and selection to the Kentucky All-Star Team.
Duane received interest and scholarship offers from nearly 75 colleges and universities before continuing his career at Division I Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. A four-year contributor, he appeared in nearly 100 games and averaged double figures in scoring during his final two seasons. He was sixth man and third leading sorer on the historic 2003 Butler Bulldogs team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. After failing to make a single shot during his sophomore season, he rebounded as a junior by ranking third in the nation in field goal percentage at 66%. By the time he graduated, he held the school record.
Although undrafted in the 2004 NBA Draft, Duane received professional offers from dozens of countries to play internationally before continuing to pursue the game he loved. In 2008, he was selected in the Slamball League Draft by the Bouncers.
Through this podcast, Duane builds a platform where athletes and individuals tell the real stories sports never show—stories that expose hard truths, lasting lessons, and life beyond competition.
Everyone has a story someone needs to hear. Our mission is to tell those stories honestly and without filters—bringing forward conversations and experiences most people avoid or never talk about.
